Overview

Purpose of the Position:

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is one of the largest biodiversity conservation NGOs in southern Africa. The Endangered Wildlife Trust and the International Crane Foundation, aims to have stable wild populations of the four threatened crane species resident to sub-Saharan Africa, with a strategic focus on safeguarding the two sub- species of each of the crowned crane species and the natural geographic range of Wattled and Blue Cranes.

Reporting line: African Crane Conservation Programme (ACCP) Southern African Regional Manager

Qualifications and Experience required:

A minimum of a three year degree in the natural sciences or other relevant field;
A good understanding of and experience in field data collection and management plans
An understanding of the Biodiversity Stewardship Process;
Good communication skills;
Ability to network and work with land owners and other conservation bodies;
Good writing skills and a proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programmes;
Possession of a valid South African or international driver’s license, and suitable driving experience.
Conservation & Field work:
Implement conservation actions as required for the project and conduct crane monitoring;
Draft and monitor the implementation of management plans for stewardship sites;
Assist the Southern Drakensberg Stewardship Facilitator in conducting monitoring and field research aimed at developing a tool that effectively measures changes in ecosystem services;
Assist with the EcoRanger project and other deliverables as required in terms of the EU funded project in the Southern Drakensberg;
Register the EWT as an Interested and Affected Party for relevant Environmental Impact Assessments, and provide input as required through the EIA process;
In collaboration line mangers, develop relationships with and liaise as appropriate with relevant provincial authorities;
Conduct powerline-bird investigations and complete reports as relevant for the EWT’s Wildlife and Energy Programme’
Represent the EWT at relevant associations within the region, i.e. conservancies and, farmers associations.
Fundraising and marketing
Assist the ICF/EWT-ACCP Southern African Regional Manager and ACCP Stewardship Facilitator with providing regular project updates to project sponsors and service sponsors as required;
Contribute to the development of regular popular articles on the ICF/EWT-ACCP, and to EWT and ICF publications and others if requested;

This ten month position will be based within the Midlands or Southern grassland regions of KwaZulu-Natal, and will include extensive travel across the KwaZulu-Natal / Eastern Cape Drakensberg Midlandsc.
