IUCN’s Global Forest and Climate Change Programme (GFCCP) is developing a partnership to strengthen the Oceania Region’s forest capacity and programme as part of IUCN’s 2013-16 programme priorities. With this, the IUCN Oceania forestry programme focus is on Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa and Federated States of Micronesia. The PNG Government has announced that it intends to ban the export of round logs by 2020 and has requested IUCN to assist. IUCN will provide a draft white paper that will look at the experiences of other countries in implementing a ban on the exports of round logs and recommend a way forward for PNG.
