Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a marine scientist with a passion for working with people to join our science team. Based in the bustling harbour town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, you will lead the delivery and development of HWDT’s boat-based Cetacean Research Programme.

The HWDT Cetacean Monitoring Programme was established in 2002 to collect the scientific evidence required to understand the cetacean species that populate Hebridean waters. Now in its 16th year of operation the programme continues to deliver that evidence and has critically advanced the understanding of Scotland’s whales, dolphins and porpoises, and the threats they face. Our survey expeditions are unique in the UK and provide an unforgettable experience for the dedicated volunteers who join us on board.

The successful candidate will have a degree in a scientific or environmental subject, extensive experience working with volunteers and leading citizen science research projects. Working primarily on board the Trust’s research vessel Silurian you will be responsible for training programme volunteers, and supervising the collection of high quality data during 7 – 12 day survey expeditions (April – October). Working within the HWDT science team you will develop the Trust’s data management and scientific protocols, champion the use of HWDT data, and contribute to analysis and publications.
