Overview

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a marine geophysicist with expertise in processing and interpreting marine multichannel seismic data. The successful post holder will be given the exciting opportunity of taking part in a research cruise in the Southern Ocean in January-February 2018 on board the RRS Discovery, to collect the data for processing and interpretation. The findings and results of examining these data will contribute towards research papers, and will also be uploaded to the Site Survey Data Bank of the International Ocean Discovery Program.
This role requires an enthusiastic and motivated marine geophysicist with a great team work ethic. We require someone skilled in the use of seismic processing and interpretation software, with a PhD in Geophysics.

Purpose

To process approximately 3000 line-km of marine multichannel seismic data to be collected on cruise DY087, thereby making an essential contribution to the NERC-funded project ‘Paleogene Climate and Deep-water Evolution in the Southwest Atlantic: Seismic Reflection and Coring Investigations in Support of IODP Proposal 862-Pre’. To work as part of a shipboard scientific team to collect these data and other datasets and samples required for delivery of the project. To work as part of the project team to interpret the seismic data, contribute to research papers including the results, and upload the processed data to the Site Survey Data Bank of the International Ocean Discovery Program.

Qualification

PhD In Geophysics or at a level commensurate with a PhD in Geophysics.

Duties

– Attend training courses required for research cruise participation.
– Participate in research cruise DY087 on RRS Discovery and take responsibility for quality control and initial onboard processing of seismic data.
– Assist in collecting other types of data and samples required for delivery of the project as directed by the line manager and Principal Scientist.
– Carry out post-cruise processing of multichannel seismic data collected on DY087 cruise under the guidance of line manager.
– Interpret seismic reflection, acoustic sub-bottom profiling and multibeam echo sounding, data from DY087 and previous cruises to the study area and work as part of the project team to integrate these interpretations with those from other data types.
– Prepare and contribute to reports, conference presentations and scientific papers as agreed with the line manager.
