The Wildbase Oil Response Team at Massey University is looking to appoint a Research Officer who can assist in the running of NZ’s Oiled Wildlife Response team, based at the University’s Manawatu campus, in Palmerston North. The role is to provide support for oiled wildlife response activities and to complement the existing expertise, knowledge and skill base in the oiled wildlife response team within Wildbase and in collaboration with Maritime New Zealand.

Specifically, this position will entail Oil Response Activities which include on-call duties, assist with the development and facilitation of Oiled Wildlife Response training courses, assist with oiled wildlife project management and delivery, which will require domestic travel, assist with creation and/or updating of standard operating procedures and response plans and liaising with clients and stakeholders.

To be successful in appointment to this role, you must possess a post-graduate degree (Masters or PhD) in biological or environmental sciences, planning or a veterinary degree and have experience working in the subject areas of wildlife and/or environment, either in a field, rehabilitation, veterinary or planning capacity. You will need to have a strong team work focus and have excellent communication and time management skills. The job requires on-call and travel at short notice and previous experience in emergency management or oiled wildlife training is desirable. An ability to demonstrate analytical and out of the box thinking and practical skills related to problem solving and equipment use is desirable.
