Millions of hectares of open, fire-maintained landscapes have been replaced through succession by dense closed-canopy forests, to the detriment of early successional wildlife and vegetation. Restoration efforts that reintroduce disturbance are essential to reverse extensive losses, but our understanding of how this is best accomplished remains limited.
