Applications are invited for the PGCert in Ecological Survey Techniques to commence in September 2016.

The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and confidence necessary to conduct informed ecological field surveys. It also aims to enable students to quantify and analyse data in order to effectively assess and monitor biodiversity and ecosystems.

As a part-time course delivered through a mixture of face-to-face, online and experiential learning, the PGCert is highly attractive to professionals looking to develop their careers while managing multiple commitments.

Features include:

  • Introductory week in Oxford with Wytham Woods field trip and training in GIS using QGIS
  • Online modules in Field Techniques for Surveying Vegetation, Mammals and Reptiles, Fish and Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Birds
  • An online module in Data Analysis with R and QED Statistics
  • An independent field project
  • Individual tutorials
  • Access to the University of Oxford Bodleian Libraries online library resources (including e-books and e-journals)

Key modules are also available throughout the year as standalone online short-courses led by an experienced ecologist or practitioner in the following areas:

  • Data Analysis in Ecology for those wishing to develop an understanding of QED Statistics and R.
  • Field Techniques for Surveying Vegetation
  • Field Techniques for Surveying Mammals and Reptiles
  • Field Techniques for Surveying Birds
  • Field Techniques for Surveying Fish and Amphibians
  • Field Techniques for Surveying Invertebrates

These courses can be taken with or without academic credit. Course credit and fees can be counted towards the Postgraduate Certificate should students wish to apply at a later date (up to two years after completion). Students also gain access to all University of Oxford online library resources (including e-books and e-journals) for the duration of the course.
