Salary: £16,000. Accommodation costs are included whilst resident on the island.

Location: Skomer Island

To market, deliver and improve the overall visitor experience on Skomer Island, including overnight and day visitors

Interviews will be held at the Welsh Wildlife Centre (SA43 2TB) on Tuesday 10 March.

Main duties:

  • Day-to-day co-ordination of Skomer day visitors and overnight guests, including welcoming visitors to the island and managing visitor baggage and being the primary point of contact on the island for booking queries
  • The line managment of visitor-focussed long term volunteers
  • Maintenance and enhancement of visitor facilities including interpretation, signage and social media
  • To work in partnership with the mainland staff based at Lockley Lodge visitor centre to enhance the whole visitor experience
  • Marketing of Skomer visits with a particular emphasis on the shoulder seasons
  • To be the main point of contact for education and events work on the island
  • To ensure that all times the provisions of health and safety legislation, and island emergency procedures, are complied with through the post holder’s work
  • Maintenance of good communication and liaison with Trust staff, other key organisations (especially Dale Sailing), volunteers and volunteer groups (especially the Friends of Skokholm and Skomer, and visiting groups)
  • To contribute to maintenance and cleaning of island buildings and other visitors’ structures under the direction of the Skomer Wardens, including routine preparation for new arrivals and re-stocking / purchasing of cleaning materials
  • To provide information to members of the public or direct their queries as appropriate
  • To organise and give guided walks and events for day visitors and overnight guests
  • In conjunction with line manager and senior staff, to deal with media enquiries, presenting the public face of WTSWW and its management of Skomer Island NNR as appropriate.
  • To maximise every opportunity to promote the Trust and recruit new members
  • To undertake other duties appropriate to the post that may be requested from time to time  by the line management.

Person specification:

  • Minimum three years experience working in hospitality or tourism industries
  • Experience of staff, visitor and resource management at a high profile site
  • Experience of working with, and motivating, volunteers
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience of using and maintaining a wide range of equipment and machinery including alternative energy systems, water pumps, generators and tractors
  • Experience of media and public relations, with a confident and professional manner
  • H&S legislation and emergency procedures, first aid
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, to a wide range of audiences
  • Competence with IT including ability to design posters, leaflets and other marketing materials
  • Experience of using social media for marketing
  • Good organisational skills, prioritising workloads effectively and monitoring outcomes
  • Team working and leadership skills
  • Experence of budget planning and management
  • Effective project management and co-ordination skills with the ability to take on tasks from conception to completion

Desirable:

  • Expertise in a branch of natural history, particularly ornithology
  • Experience of working in an island environment
  • Welsh speaker
