Project Description: The Communities by Species/Gear Project is an effort to understand fishing communities by fisheries management plans (FMPs). Federal managers manage fisheries by FMPs. Anthropologists may look at communities by a sense of place, a community of interest, or a virtual community. This effort utilizes existing secondary data from Pacific Fisheries Information Network (PacFIN) to 1) identify which communities may be important to the FMPs managed, then 2) determine the diversity of fisheries that are important to the communities selected by FMPs, and 3) examine the gears used within the communities. Results are then mapped and matched to existing community profiling efforts. This information is then communicated to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council and NOAA’s West
