Overview

Blue Ventures is an award-winning marine conservation organisation working to rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities. We’re committed to protecting marine biodiversity in ways that benefit coastal people. We work in places where the ocean is vital to local cultures and economies, and where there is a fundamental unmet need to support human development.

The effectiveness of Blue Ventures’ work is measured not only through our impact on biodiversity and fisheries, but also through a number of outcomes relating to the wellbeing of the coastal communities we support.  These include poverty alleviation, food security, adaptive capacity to climate change, gender equality, and access to sexual and reproductive health services.

Summary job description

We are currently recruiting a Social Survey Supervisor/ Analyst to oversee the implementation of our existing integrated social survey (ISS) programme at our field site in Belo Sur Mer, western Madagascar.  The position will be supported in Madagascar by Blue Ventures’ assistant social scientist, and work closely with the monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL)  team, programme managers and site team.  The ISS programme involves collecting quantitative and qualitative data across all of Blue Ventures’ projects to identify how they impact upon the main environmental and other problems faced by communities in Belo Sur Mer. Responsibilities will include some adaptation of existing survey tools to suit the local context while maintaining alignment with parallel research underway at  other sites; supporting recruitment and supervision of survey teams; leading data analysis; and producing succinct, accessible research summaries for use by field teams.

We are seeking a highly motivated social scientist, with applied experience of social science methods (especially  household surveys) good knowledge of statistical methods, and experience managing a small team.

The successful candidate will thrive in environments that are dynamic, fast-paced, collegiate and ambitious, and be able to demonstrate experience working independently and solving complex problems in challenging environments.  Helping to train and supervise survey teams conducting household surveys will form a central part of the role.  This will require excellent organisation skills, patience and willingness to work long hours in the field, and  excellent skills in quality control of data.

The Social Survey Supervisor/ Analyst  will report directly to Blue Ventures’ Site Manager in Belo Sur Mer, and will receive technical supervision and support from Blue Ventures’ Social Research Coordinator (based in Canada) and Monitoring and Evaluation Manager (based in the United Kingdom). The Social Survey Supervisor/ Analyst will have direct line management responsibilities for temporary contractors carrying out surveys and research in the field.
