The Islands Restoration Programme is run jointly by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF), Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the National Parks and Conservation Service. The programme was started in 2015 but is built upon three decades of island restoration work by the project partners.
The focus of the Islands Restoration Programme has been towards removing invasive species, replanting native vegetation, monitoring and reintroducing native and endemic animals, many of which are threatened. The Islands Restoration Programme consists of approximately 15 field staff and volunteer interns working within four core areas: the Mauritian Reptile Recovery Programme, the Tortoise Rewilding Project, the Seabird Community Restoration Project and the Round Island Restoration Programme, as detailed below. The Islands Restoration Programme is also supported through multiple postgraduate research projects and international academic research institutes.
The Island Restoration Coordinator will report to the Island Restoration Manager.
We are looking for a candidate who is organized, has experience of conservation projects and managing a team successfully. An ability to understand the project goals, project actions and project constraints is needed along with being able to support the staff with hands-on responsibility for the projects to enable them to deliver. The post holder will participate in planning projects with the Island Restoration Manager and then ensure the project actions are implemented. The post holder will be required to write project proposals and support fundraising initiatives.
The selected candidate will also have to assist, support in all aspect of recruitment for staffing in the Island Restoration programmes.
From time to time, the position holder will to work with the Directors of MWF, other Managers of MWF as well as with projects partners. These can include the National Parks and Conservation Service, other government sectors or Ministries, conservation organizations, local and foreign universities and researchers. The post holder would also be expected to represent the foundation in meetings or workshops and participate in community engagement.
- Assist with project planning and adaptive management plan development
- Assist with updating and developing protocols for activities undertaken within the programme
- Assist in report writing, data management and analyses
- Ensure all monthly and annual reports are obtained from each project and are edited to a suitable standard for stakeholder submission
- Ensure data are collected, validated and updated within spreadsheets and databases on a monthly basis
- Assist with staff recruitment and permit applications
- Support of staff appraisals
- Organising and participating in regular staff meetings
- Oversee staff leave and holiday time
- Assist with planning island expeditions, island transport and staff movements in addition to coordinating the Round Island changeover schedule
- Participate where needed with island restoration activities
- Assist with organising transport for staff on the mainland
- Support fund-raising activities and grant applications
- Manage use of the Blue Bay Office and Accommodation • Support education and training activities, including first aid training
- Assist with project purchases and budgeting
- Maintaining equipment inventories and stock
- Assist with the management of biological samples, permissions, permits and exportation paperwork
- Facilitate student, researcher and VIP visits
- Participation in lectures and presentations
- Be ready to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with initiative and due care
- Be proactive and work well within a team and alone
- Be flexible with working at odd hours when required
- A bachelor’s degree in conservation related fields.
- A minimum of five years working post university demonstrating an ability to manage a team and with good organisational and leadership skills
- A minimum of 3 years’ demonstrated experience working in conservation including field work with experience in island restoration a definite advantage.
- Scientific knowledge of, and field experience with, in the conservation world
- Proficiency with understanding maps, natural resource information, and other spatial data.
- Demonstrated experience in record keeping and data management.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of individuals.
- Well organised and self-directed, with attention to detail and follow-through necessary for conservation actions.
- Proficiency with PC systems, Microsoft Office and GIS programs.
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
- A valid driving license.
