Construction and development activities can have significant impacts on biodiversity. The planning sector therefore has an important role to play in minimising harm to biodiversity as a result of development and in halting the declines in UK wildlife seen over the last 50 years. A lack of access to ecological expertise, however, often prevents planning decisions from achieving the best outcomes for biodiversity. To help address this, the Bat Conservation Trust established the Partnership for Biodiversity in Planning in December 2014, with funding support from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The partnership includes representation from 19 organisations within the conservation, planning and development sectors and aims to improve the consideration of biodiversity in the planning process.
