Description Halley VI has considerable operating lifespan remaining and is expected to last for many years to come. Unpredictable Glaciological conditions on the Brunt Ice Shelf have caused BAS to make the decision to not over winter staff at Halley for the past 3 years. The station is in excellent condition and is being used as a science platform during Antarctic summers & a prototype micro turbine unit is operating at Halley over the winter allowing automated instruments to feed scientific data back to the UK. To comply with the Antarctic Treaty Environmental Protocol British Antarctic Survey aims to have management plans in place for refurbishment, clean-up or decommissioning of its research stations.
