Overview

Job Purpose
At a senior and strategic level, take the lead in developing and implementing the Association’s
high-profile programmes and associated policies for conservation, science and biodiversity
activities.

Lead and maintain the development of a culture within BASC and the shooting community that
embeds evidence-based decision making and proactive conservation work.
Act as a positive senior ambassador, representing the Association with a range of key external
stakeholders, partners and other bodies and forums to ensure BASC is a trusted and
respected partner both nationally and internationally.
Provide inspirational leadership and direction to both the Conservation team and across the
whole of BASC to achieve the conservation vision and strategy of the Association.

Principal Accountabilities
1. With the Chief Executive, Senior Management Team, regional and country teams and
relevant committees, agree and implement BASC’s specialist research, policy and
strategic framework in areas relating to conservation and science,
2. Providing senior and strategic leadership, motivation, line management and personal
development for the Conservation teams (Biodiversity, Research Department, Policy
and Science).
3. Ensure that key research, conservation and science projects are effectively developed
and delivered by the team.
4. Ensure all BASC departments achieve their targets for delivering strategy and policy
objectives related to conservation and science and that they are developed and
motivated to do so.
5. With the Conservation teams, develop and implement their respective work
programmes so they make the most effective contribution to achievement of the
Association’s wider strategic objectives.
6. Ensure a coherent BASC strategy for conservation and science is in place across the
whole of the United Kingdom, which engages with the strategies and policies of UK
government and European and international treaties and conventions
7. As a positive ambassador for the Association, act as a senior specialist point of
contact with relevant Government departments, statutory agencies and voluntary
conservation bodies, ensuring that BASC is aware of, and responds to, policy change
and developments within them.
8. Take the lead in presenting the case for supporting conservation programmes to
Government, grant giving trusts, corporate donors and wealthy prospects.
9. A media spokesperson for BASC on conservation and science related matters.
10. Ensure the delivery of high quality defined membership services and represent the
best interests of the members at all times.
11. Play a key role in BASC’s fundraising strategy for conservation and science
programmes.
12. Oversee the preparation of and review of annual budgets for the conservation teams
and ensuring they are met.
13. Develop credibility of BASC conservation membership category
14. Act as ex-officio member of BASC council.

Dimensions and Limits of Authority
The post holder is based at Head Office and reports to the CEO. The position will
involve travel throughout the UK and some in Europe. Therefore, the post holder is
required to hold a current clean driving licence and have recent driving experience.
Working hours are 35 ¾ per week. There will be occasions when the post holder works
additional hours, in which case any significant hours worked over 35 ¾ will be allowed
as time off in lieu, subject to approval by their line manager.
The salary will be within the current range applicable for the role, dependent upon
experience, and will include a range of benefits including pension, car, and private
medical insurance.
This role may be subject to a DBS check depending on your responsibilities.
