Introducing 'Communications Strategy Development'

During the course you’ll learn to:

  1. Understand the definition and importance of a communications strategy.
  2. Apply strategic thinking and utilise key models to assist strategy development.
  3. Identify relevant audiences for a communications campaign.
  4. Target those audiences using the most relevant communications tactics and messaging.
  5. Develop a strategy using a workshop with key stakeholders.
  6. Convert a strategy into a campaign plan and measure success.
After completing the course you’ll understand strategic communications and be confident in the process required to develop a successful communications strategy from first brief to the campaign plan.

Course Outline

  • Module 1. What is strategy and why is it essential to any comms campaign? Outcome: Understand the definition and importance of a communications strategy.

  • Module 2. Strategic thinking and models to apply to your work. Outcome: Apply strategic thinking and utilise key models to assist strategy development. .

  • Module 3. Identifying your audience. Get to know them! Outcome: Identify relevant audiences for a communications campaign.

  • Module 4. Targeting your audience through story development and messagingHow to use 'stepping stone' roles. Outcome: Target identified audiences using the most relevant communications tactics and messaging. 

  • Module 5. Workshopping and strategy development. Outcome: Develop a strategy using a workshop with key stakeholders.

  • Module 6. Pulling it all together - Converting your strategy into a plan of action and making it happen. Outcome: Convert a strategy into a campaign plan and measure success.

Your Trainer

Lloyd Gofton

 

Lloyd has over 25 years of communications experience in the agency and conservation sector, working in public relations, social media, content marketing, digital marketing, and strategy disciplines.

 

During his career, he has worked with various organisations, including O2, WWF, Greenpeace, RSPCA, Médecins Sans Frontières, Samsung, Honda and Pizza Express, as well as a wide range of challenger brands.

He started in PR in 1998 and launched his first communications agency, Liberate Media, in 2006. The agency was one of the first in the UK to combine PR, social media, and content marketing services, running campaigns in the UK and across Europe, The Middle East, Africa, North America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

 

In 2019, Lloyd decided to focus his career on conservation and animal welfare. He has since worked with organisations such as World Animal Protection, Cheetah Conservation Fund, and Wildlife Heritage Areas. He is also a Director at two marine conservation not-for-profits: Sussex Dolphin Project and Blue Planet Society. Lloyd joined Conservation Careers as our Communications Coach in 2020 and later went on to become our Head of Marketing.
