Overview

The Conservation Field Assistant (CFA) is a seasonal position starting August 22 and ending by October 22, 2022. The CFA performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management .at Sycan Marsh Preserve, south of Silver Lake, Oregon. Sycan Marsh Preserve is a 30,000 acre mile-high verdant wetland in the Upper Klamath Basin surrounded by dry-pine forested hillsides. The ‘Wild and Scenic’ Sycan River flows through the heart of the preserve. The CFA will conduct general preserve stewardship duties in support of priority projects. Priority projects during that time of year include fence maintenance, monitoring for trespass cattle, invasive species monitoring and control, infrastructure maintenance projects, and prescribed fire burn unit preparation and implementation if qualified. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The CFA performs land management activities and conducts species monitoring.   The CFA removes exotic species and/or conducts species monitoring and may also manage livestock.   The CFA may assist in prescribed burns if qualified. The CFA will assist with site, equipment and facilities maintenance, fence construction and repair, upkeep of facilities, maintain preserve records using a database, PC or mobile device.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
  • May require long hours in isolated settings.
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • May work under infrequent supervision.
  • Housing is provided and will be in the same building as the position’s supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g.First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 – 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
  • Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
