The Fisheries Specialist (Specialist) engages fishers from state to local levels to find common ground and viable solutions to fisheries management needs, including through The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) work with community-led fisheries stewardship initiatives. These initiatives bring communities and the state government together to develop place-based fisheries management plans informed by local traditional practices and ʻike kūpuna (knowledge of the elders).TNC’s approach aims to provide equitable access for the community to fisheries information to assess the health of their fishery and support community decisions on stewardship pathways, and meet community and state goals for ʻāina momona (abundant food resources), including sustainable harvest for food security and reef heal
