Overview

We have three vacancies for people with strong Geographic Information and data analysis skills. The successful applicants will be responsible for providing geospatial information services to the Natural Capital & Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) Programme. This is a new Defra Group evidence programme which aims to deliver high quality national and local evidence to assess the state and condition of biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural capital assets across our terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. The post holders will support specific NCEA projects such as the England Ecosystem Survey and Habitat Network Mapping.

The Geospatial Information leads will be expected to: 

  • Work under the direction of senior colleagues to support NCEA projects by providing GIS analysis using ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of products.
  • Provide high quality mapping and statistics for NCEA programme reporting and for external stakeholders.
  • Develop new tools to improve the way NCEA projects use geospatial information.
  • Work with the NCEA data mobilisation team to manage project data and data from external stakeholders in accordance with data licencing and data management procedures.
  • Provide GIS technical support, advice, and training to NCEA project staff.
  • Provide ad hoc GIS support within the wider Evidence Team as required.
  • Develop their GI expertise through a programme of Continuing Professional Development

  • Advanced level use of desktop ESRI ArcGIS products (e.g. ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, etc.) (Essential)
  • Strong data analysis skills and experience of using appropriate methods to analyse a range of geographical, biological, and social data. (Essential)
  • Good data presentation skills, such as producing maps and statistics for reports or external publications. (Essential)
  • Good data management skills and experience of working within data licencing and data standards (e.g. metadata standards, Open Data, GDPR, etc.). (Essential)
  • Experienced in transforming data, including integrating different data types (e.g. spatial and non-spatial) and from different data sources. (Essential)
  • Able to work within a framework of agreed Quality Assurance standards. (Essential)
  • Experience of using ArcGIS Online. (Desirable)
  • Experience of using other GIS software (e.g. FME, QGIS, etc.). (Desirable)
  • Experience of Python and/or R scripting. (Desirable)
  • Experience of data modelling (e.g. ArcGIS Model Builder, etc.). (Desirable)
  • Experience of working with Remote Sensing data. (Desirable)
  • Experience of using Microsoft Excel and Access. (Desirable)
