Overview

To conduct the habituation program, and monitor progress, WCS supports a team of Gibbon
Researchers from the local community. These teams work 16-24 days per month, habituating gibbon groups following international best practice. The Gibbon Habituation Volunteer is responsible for supporting these habituation efforts, ensuring compliance with best practice, and supporting the rollout and adoption of a mobile app based data collection method to monitor progress and collect biological data.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Background in relevant field, ideally primates and habituation
  • Relevant degree in biology, zoology, conservation, or similar

Responsibilities

  • Support habituation of yellow-cheeked crested gibbon near to Jahoo Gibbon Camp
  • Training
    • Receive training on habituation protocols and best practice to avoid disturbing and stressing gibbon groups
    • Receive training on data collection, both on paper and using a smartphone (provided)Provide training to local Gibbon Researchers on the above
  • Habituation
    • Ensure implementation and adherence to best practice
    • Join with teams in the field 16-24 days per month
  • Data collection
    • Collect and support collection of data on gibbons
    • Use paper and pen, or smartphones to collect data
    • Ensure data are kept dry and safe, and given to the WCS Ecotourism Coordinator soon after collection
  • Outreach and reporting
    • Support outreach programs related to gibbons in Andoung Kraloeng and other villages
    • Provide monthly feedback to WCS and WHI on progress of habituation
  • Ecotourism operations support
    • Provide gibbon information to visiting tour groups
    • Support WHI with additional activities related to Jahoo Gibbon Camp

Remuneration

  • Monthly stipend, dependent on experience, starting at $500 per month.
  • National travel and accommodation

Duty station

  • Andoung Kraloeung village and Sen Monorom Town, Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia

  • WCS Data Analyst and Operations Technical Advisor
