Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) aims to restore health to the ocean. BLUE has developed a bold strategy to address the crisis in Greece’s waters. BLUE is creating new marine protected areas (MPAs), improving existing MPAs, establishing models of sustainable, low impact fishing, restoring habitats, effecting a shift in fisheries and conservation policy, and reconnecting people with the sea. Through this strategy, BLUE aims to restore a thriving Mediterranean Sea that is teeming with life and have recovered from historical depletion and habitat damage.

BLUE is seeking a Greece Marine Projects Manager to assist in delivering Greek marine conservation projects.

You will have a passion for the ocean and an awareness of the opportunities to create change. This is an incredible chance to join a highly impactful charity at the cutting edge of marine conservation.

The location of this role is between Greece with visits to the UK as required (therefore predominantly on the ground in Greece).

Salary: circa EUR 40,000 per year (dependent on experience)

Hours: 40 hours per week, according to the needs of the projects

Contract: 12-month contract with possible extension for 4 years

Role & responsibilities

• Delivery of BLUE’s Greek marine conservation projects covering MPAs, inshore fisheries, habitat restoration and community conservation.
• Support the development and management of marine conservation projects in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.
• Build good working relationships with Greek project stakeholders including governments, NGOs and the fishing sector.
• Engagement via workshops and meetings with MPA managers and partners.
• Build strong working relationships with the marine stakeholder community – including the fishing community – government and agencies.
• Actively participate in and contribute to working groups with partner organisations and coalitions.
• Delivering BLUE’s Greek projects and campaigns.
• Research and gather information relevant to projects and provide summaries of these where appropriate to the project team.
• Assist with regular reporting to BLUE and funders on progress against deliverables for Mediterranean projects.
• Support the development of funding proposals for government, trusts and foundations as well as private donors.
• Write reports and proposals for internal and external consumption as and when required.
• Attend and speak at relevant national and international marine conservation workshops, meetings and conferences when required.
• Represent BLUE when required at meetings, events and other engagement opportunities.
• Ensure all databases for UK projects are maintained and up to date.
• Creation of content such as blog writing and updates for BLUE’s website and other communication platforms.

Skills required

• Relevant qualification and/or experience of marine science, marine conservation and/or fisheries.
• Skills in extracting and summarising key issues in scientific and policy papers in a way that makes it easy to understand.
• Excellent fieldwork skills.
• Self-motivated and able to work using own initiative.
• Able to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and meet key deadlines.
• Able to multi-task and work across multiple documents and platforms.
• An excellent communicator (written and verbal), with an ability to build relationships.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent project management skills.
• A drive and determination to succeed.
• Fluent in Greek and English (Exceptional English writing skills required).
• Excellent team working and inter-personal skills.
• A technical knowledge of marine conservation and/or fisheries management.
• A command of relevant software, such as MS Office.
• Full driving licence.

Experience required

• Previous experience of marine management, fisheries management, marine conservation, environmental management and/or consulting.
• Relevant experience of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
• Experience with and good understanding of the EU Habitats Directive.
• Experience with MedPAN and other Mediterranean conservation associations.
• Knowledge of fisheries management concepts, such as stock management, maximum sustainable yield and fishing capacity.
• Knowledge of Greek marine habitats and species. I.e. Posidonia seagrass, monk seals, commercial targeted marine species and invasive species.
• Experience of engaging and managing relationships with stakeholders.
• A good understanding of European marine regulation.
• Proven experience and understanding of marine protected area management.
• A demonstrable ability to deliver elements of marine conservation projects.
• A demonstrable track record of effecting positive change within the marine environment.
