A unique opportunity for a dynamic Safety Manager has come up for the British Antarctic Survey in the Health and Safety Team. This role will report to the Health and Safety Advisor and will work closely with the Polar and Cambridge Station Operation Managers.

The ideal candidate will either have a minimum of three years’ experience of working within a health and safety team and hold a NEBOSH certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or similar) in a medium to high hazard industry or experience of working in a polar environment.

Purpose

To provide professional advice on matters relating to Health and Safety. To assist the BAS Senior Health and Safety Adviser in facilitating the BAS Safety Management System (SMS).

To provide a focus and expertise for Station operations (including Cambridge) to support ‘Station Operations Managers’ to deliver the day-to-day activities associated with the station SMS.

Qualification

NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety

Working to NEBOSH diploma level qualification, or equivalent is desireable

Duties

  • To update BAS procedures ensuring regularity, UKRI and BAS compliance.
  • Assisting health and Safety Advisor in ensuring the BAS SMS remains in compliance with ISO 45001
  • To produce H&S lessons learnt posters from accidents and near misses.
  • Training staff on health and safety issues
  • Promoting a positive safety culture through working in partnership with BAS departments and partners.
  • Assist in managing the BAS Health and Safety web tools: Intranet, Risk assessment and procedures databases (Maximo), AINME reporting system (Maximo), DSE/fire training and risk assessment on line training
  • To conduct H&S audits at BAS.
  • Co-ordinating and supporting the BAS H&S corporate training programme
  • The provision of specialist advice and assistance on matters relating to Health & Safety, for stations: Advice on and facilitating the risk assessment process, Assisting in identifying  appropriate safety controls, Supporting station managers in maintaining the station SMS up-to-date and compliance, including corrective action tracking, audit planning, incident investigations, procedure reviews, Ensuring a consistent approach is used across the SMS/ Quality management
  • Representing the BAS Health & Safety Adviser where appropriate
  • To support the Health, Safety improvement and development projects.
  • General procurement and finance management
  • Handling and presentation of Health and Safety performance data
  • Any other duties, within the remit of this role, as tasked by the Director
