Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to become involved with a Wales ‘first’ species conservation project. We are seeking an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic Project Development Officer to deliver this single species development project in the Vale of Glamorgan, and wider environs. With an emphasis both on engagement and species management, you will build partnerships, develop contacts and build a suite of projects as well as engage with local landowners, experts and other Natur am Byth! partners and contractors.

Specific Tasks

  • Undertake background research, identification of and liaison with internal and external stakeholders (particularly private landowners, commoners, land managers, and NRW)
  • Implement and manage a contract for site-wide habitat survey and assessment to identify
    management prescriptions for future management.
  • Undertake site visits, GIS & mapping queries, drafting of species requirements and identify
    volunteering, education and community engagement opportunities
  • Data-sharing will be carried out with partner organisations during the Development Phase of the project to identify gaps in baseline data and species requirements going forward, to ensure there are no negative impacts upon other target species and to build up the plan and timetable for the Delivery Phase
  • Confirm identity of all landowners & commoners and engage with them about NaB and seek permissions/management agreements to undertake appropriate land management
  • Contact local schools and all ability groups to gauge interest and develop ideas for appropriate engagement
  • Engage with local (St Brides & Ewenny) and the ’wider’ local communities to instil a sense of pride and intrinsic value.
  • Identify through social media channels organisations, local artisans, and education establishment who could work with NaB to deliver artistic and interpretative outputs for wider benefit
  • Identify organisations that could benefit from working with NaB and being a part of this project to improve health, welfare, and wellbeing e.g autism groups, disability Wales, Noah’s Ark childrens hospital, etc.
  • Organise and deliver workshops for stakeholders/communities/landowners and managers.
  • Facilitate positive and effective relationships between local landowners and managers and advisors within each landscape.
  • Undertake individual site advisory visits within the project area providing specific and effective advice on habitat management that will benefit rare and threatened species.
  • Help to recruit and train new conservation volunteers and build relationships with existing local volunteer groups and conservation groups.

Requirements:

  • Educated to degree/HND level in a biological or environmental science, or equivalent experience
  • Project development experience in the conservation sector
  • Experience of lepidoptera habitat and species management across a number of habitats
  • Good understanding of the principles of moth and butterfly requirements at different stages of their life-cycle
  • Experience of organising and leading conservation work parties
  • Competent with computers including Microsoft Windows and Office software
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills. The ability to engage and enthuse a wide range of individuals ranging from communities, volunteers to landowners and other land-management professionals.
  • Good presentation skills (written and spoken)
  • Experience of working with and within budgets
  • Experience of recruiting, managing, training, and enthusing volunteers
  • Experience of managing contracts and overseeing contractors.
  • Experience of community engagement across a wide range of communities
