Overview

We are seeking a Heritage at Risk Projects Officer to provide experienced advice on the planning, funding and delivery of Heritage at Risk projects across the range of asset types. Applying the ethos of ‘constructive conservation’ you will work closely with owners, local authorities and with partner agencies to negotiate effective projects, identify funding and facilitate consents. 

This is a 6-month fixed-term contract mainly working in Greater London. 

Salary: £32,488 – £33,000k pro rated

What you’ll be doing:

You’ll be responsible for reporting on project progress, updating the Heritage at Risk Register, and contributing to associated administration and public promotion of Heritage at Risk cases and themes. 

Working proactively and creatively with owners, local authorities, statutory bodies, building preservation trusts and developers, you will promote a sustainable and viable future for historic assets on the HAR Register, and advise on and implement strategic and project-based solutions for Heritage at Risk. 

You will work closely with other funding bodies (such as the National Lottery Heritage Fund etc.) to identify sources of grant aid for HAR assets and encourage and facilitate applications for support. 

You will be responsible for giving specialist advice on project planning, recording, building analysis and other investigations leading to repair. 

Please note that the role sometimes requires travel to sites not serviced by public transport.

What we are looking for:

  • A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area 
  • Substantial experience of working constructively with owners and other partners as a practitioner in the repair and management of heritage assets
  • A solid understanding of the historic environment and its assets 
  • An understanding of the planning and statutory consents system
  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices of building and monument conversation as exemplified in Conservation Principles 
  • Ability to approach Heritage at Risk problems, possible solutions and impact on the heritage asset in a practical and creative way 
  • Good oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to act as an authoritative and persuasive representative of Historic England at all levels, including public speaking
