Jamma International is an established Philanthropic and Active Impact Investment organisation based in Surrey. Their sphere of interest is focused on sustainable conservation and community development in Southern Africa and also includes engagement with Wellbeing projects in the UK. An exciting internship opportunity has been created to support existing projects by providing technical and research input. This role will suit someone used to working both autonomously and within a small team. They will work closely with the Director of Communities and Conservation, Africa, the Project Coordinator of Communities and Conservation, Africa, and the Jamma International Office Manager.

Description of position

The purpose of this position will be to: Promote conservation, protection and improvement of the natural environment · Promote the principles of sustainable utilisation of natural resources · Create recognition for and promote the important of role played by local people by furthering Community Based Natural Resource Management – CBNRM · Through implementation of CBNRM, prevent or relieve poverty and promote the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantaged communities · Facilitate local economic development and the empowerment of people and communities within the confines of CBNRM · With implementation of CBNRM, advance local education by providing or assisting in the provision of schools, school facilities and/or such other training facilities in socially and/or economically disadvantaged communities · Facilitate local economic development and the empowerment of people and communities within the confines of CBNRM · With implementation of CBNRM, advance local education by providing or assisting in the provision of schools, school facilities and/or such other training facilities in socially and/or economically disadvantaged communities.

The incumbent should be ready to: Provide support in the research and analysis of specific items of interest that will benefit Jamma’s investments and operations · Think outside the box before implementing readymade solutions. Work within the specific local context, avoid imposing solutions simply because they may have worked elsewhere, be prepared to create something bespoke, if the situation requires it · Assume a business like and result oriented approach to all work undertaken, projects and causes supported · Treat all interventions as investments made to produce tangible and lasting results · Work towards Jamma’s vision of success measured as the wellbeing of the planet and its people.

Specific Duties

  • Conduct research on areas that Jamma is interested in, investing and working in.
  • Draft and consolidate relevant documents (articles, factsheets, reports, concept notes, etc).
  • Support Jamma’s projects and interests through spatial mapping and reporting (using ArcGIS or similar).
  • Monitor and update Jamma’s social media platforms and website in alignment with Jamma’s Communications Strategy and Policy.
    • Assist in the preparation of newsletters, articles, blogs, etc.
    • Monitor media analytics to identify long-term content trends.
  • Assist the Project Coordinator and the Director of Conservation and Communities as required.
  • Assist with technical expertise and inputs where needed.
  • Other duties in line with the background and description of this position.

Qualifications and skills for this position

  • Master’s Degree in natural resource management, protected area management, biodiversity conservation or related discipline.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, time management, and interpersonal skills (essential).
  • Demonstrable research skills (essential).
  • Able to define tasks and meet set deadlines (essential).
  • Effective ArcGIS skills and experience (essential).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the Jamma team and Jamma’s wider network (essential).
  • Demonstrable field experience with conservation and or communities.
  • Proven knowledge of social media and public relations.
  • Analytical skills and familiarity with analytical/statistical software such as R
  • Proven ability to write project proposals and reports.
  • Good knowledge of software packages such as Microsoft Office.
  • Good administrative and IT skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Goal oriented and able to meet targets and objectives.
  • A passion for and commitment to Jamma values.
  • Familiarity with the dynamics and key issues relating to CBNRM in Southern Africa.
  • A firm commitment to the concept of sustainable utilization in all its forms as a useful and necessary tool for biodiversity conservation.
