Overview

Jamma International is the philanthropic arm of a private family office. Their sphere of interest is focused on: (1) sustainable human centred conservation and community development in Southern Africa; and (2) mental wellbeing issues, mainly in the UK.

An exciting new role has been created to: (1) support and optimize existing projects so that they individually can reach their full potential and together deliver a stronger result than the sum of the individual parts; and (2) help to evaluate and establish new opportunities in Southern Africa. This position will suit someone used to working both autonomously and within a small team. The person will report to the Director of Communities and Conservation, Africa (DCCA).

Salary: £50,000 to £65,000 (depending on experience). Permanent, full-time position.

Qualifications: Minimum of Master’s degree in the natural sciences or equivalent in the biodiversity conservation field. A social science masters with strong conservation experience may also be considered. A formal GIS qualification or equivalent experience is desirable.

Broad Experience: A minimum of five years’ experience in African conservation with a focus on indigenous and local communities. A strong component of field work is a considerable advantage.

Key Performance Areas and Specific Areas of Expertise:

Key performance area: To assist and support Jamma’s partners in developing and optimizing impact focussed conservation programmes and projects with a strong human centred focus. This key area will include developing and optimizing cross partner initiatives.

• Significant field experience in implementing/working on community based natural resource management or other human centred conservation projects.
• Extensive biodiversity conservation implementation and conservation planning experience, preferably at landscape level with an African focus.

Key performance area: In close cooperation with the family office, create fundraising capacity to support the Jamma vision and optimize our partners ability to contribute to the vision.

• Experience in building fundraising networks for conservation projects.
• A well-developed skill set in proposal writing with proven success in winning funding from a variety of donor agencies.

Key performance area: Assist with developing and optimizing Jamma’s social and community networks.

• Expertise in in social network mapping and its analysis.
• Well-developed people skills.  It will be an advantage if these were gained working with IPLC’s.

Key performance area: Develop and ensure optimal performance for Jamma’s project onboarding and management systems.

• Extensive knowledge and experience of grant and proposal management.
• Experience with systems such as Giving Data and Benefactor.
• Experience working with assessment panels and/or advisory groups in the conservation and social arena.

The key performance areas for this post highlight its focus, but it is important to note that this is a senior management role in a small team. The incumbent will play a key role in assisting the team to realize its vision and support the Director of Conservation and Communities in potentially all aspects of Jamma’s operations. For this reason, strong administrative and financial expertise are another key requirement.
