Overview

Lost Lake Woods Club (LLWC) is a private recreation club with over 11,000 acres of beautiful Northeast Michigan property. The club offers numerous family recreational opportunities such as Golf, Hunting, Fishing, Water Sports and Shooting Sports as well as many social activities enjoyed during all four seasons of the year. Our goal is to manage our resources to achieve a sound balance between wildlife, habitat, and recreational interests for approximately 1000 members.

Established in 1926, LLWC has a strong history of wildlife management and is seeking qualified applicants to fill its Wildlife Biologist contractual position. In this position you will be responsible for managing all aspects of our wildlife goals and objectives related to fish, fowl, mammal, and other natural resources with a strong emphasis on deer herd management. An individual with solid organizational and interpersonal skills are required to excel in this membership environment.

LLWC has been engaged in quality deer management since 2003. The goals of the deer management program have been centered on wildlife habitat improvement via timber cutting, food plots and improving the buck to doe ratio by harvesting antlerless deer. The overall goal is to improve on our existing efforts while being open to the insights and recommendations of a professional biologist.

Job responsibilities to include:

  • Collect biological data from hunter harvested animals during the first three (3) days of firearm deer season at our established deer check station. This involves dawn to dark efforts working closely with our volunteer team of dedicated individuals who currently collect this data. Perform tasks as mandated by LLWC and MDNR regarding size, weight, aging and disease control. Similar efforts may be required during the first two (2) days of Early Firearm Antlerless Season (Saturday and Sunday or as season dictates).
  • Provide technical input and analysis of data collected from the deer hunting check station, Deer Hunter Observation Cards, Biological Deer Data, Volunteer Deer Survey, Member Camera Survey and Spring Survey results. Technical input will include the preparation of reports for each survey to provide annual antlerless harvest recommendations for LLWC.
  • Attend Conservation Committee Meetings (currently 1st Saturday of each month) to maintain communication and obtain updated input from members (Minimum of four (4) meetings).
  • Provide technical input as needed to Conservation Committee on deer, budget items, and provide quarterly informative newsletter submissions.
  • Work with LLWC to define and update club’s long-term wildlife and habitat management plan. Identify goals and objectives and provide documentation outlining LLWC’s management direction.
  • Collaborate with our Conservation Committee on current and future farming (food plot) operations in efforts to improve LLWC’s long-term wildlife and habitat management plan. . Identify goals and objectives and provide documentation outlining LLWC’s management direction.
  • Collaborate with the Club Forester on all forest management activities as new wildlife goals and objectives are developed. Review and provide input for the annual timber harvest proposals and site check for compliance of wildlife and habitat objectives
  • Collaborate with the Conservation Committee during our member trail camera survey to obtain and analyze critical biological data needed to manage the LLWC deer herd. Provide a review of the results and report for the Conservation Committee if requested.
  • Manage all local, state and federal grant applications related to obtaining outside funding to help achieve our wildlife management goals.
  • Manage and oversee invasive species treatment program including any permit applications and reporting to the MDEQ as required.
  • Manage the MDNR Goose Harassment and USDA Cormorant Permit applications and provide year end reports where applicable.
  • Provide the LLWC Board of Directors, Conservation Committee, and Manager with reports of activities and results.
  • Reports to accompany each invoice.
  • Provide a professional electronic presentation summarizing the LLWC deer herd at the Annual Deer Hunters Roundup (currently Evening of November 15th).
  • Provide End of the year Natural Resource Management Summary of activities to be submitted for the January
  • Conservation Committee meeting annually. This report should include but not be limited to information regarding recommendations made to consulting forester regarding wildlife habitat, summary of existing farming operations, an overview of wildlife trends in the region and on LLWC, recommendations for future management considerations, and other wildlife management points of interest that occur during the year but do not necessarily merit their own report.
  • Provide consultation on additional wildlife-related work items to meet the changing needs of LLWC while managing wildlife and habitat. This may result in additional work items outside the scope of this contract. When additional compensation is required, such additional work items must be approved in advance by both LLWC and selected Biologist prior to performing such work.
