Project background / purpose Ile aux Aigrettes is a 26-hectare coralline island located in Mahébourg Bay, about 800m off the southeast coast of Mauritius. The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) initiated habitat restoration activities and management of the island in 1985. MWF has a full time presence of staff and volunteers living and working there. Much of the island’s habitat has been restored, representing the last dry coastal forest ecosystem that was once common around Mauritius. The restoration work has permitted the reintroduction of threatened land birds and reptiles. However, the island requires constant invasive species detection, control and where possible eradication.
