Overview

Dr. Ben Halpern’s research group is a diverse, inclusive scientific team that employs open environmental data science approaches to tackle pressing research questions in ocean sustainability, with the aim to uncover strategic, effective and efficient solutions to environmental problems. Halpern’s research group is based at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), an independent research affiliate of UCSB that conducts transformational science focused on informing solutions that allow people and nature to thrive.

We are seeking up to two full-time Junior Specialists to embed within several ongoing projects focused on understanding and mapping how human activities impact coastal marine ecosystems, with a particular focus on aquaculture, fisheries, and the global food system. The candidates will be based at NCEAS in Santa Barbara, CA and will be responsible for: 1) data discovery, processing and cataloguing; 2) where appropriate, spatial modeling of human activities and stressors at global scales; and 3) supporting and participating in preparation of scientific manuscripts based on the research.
These full-time positions offer competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience. The appointments are for 12 months, with the strong possibility of extension pending available funds and strong performance. The successful candidates will be directly mentored by Ben Halpern and integrated with his research lab and related project teams – which offers opportunities to work across other on-going and related projects.

RESIDENCY AT NCEAS:

NCEAS is located in scenic downtown Santa Barbara, California. The Center is known for fostering interaction and collaboration, a characteristic that leads to the success of its visiting scientists. NCEAS has a growing and thriving community of postdocs, resident scientists, and analysts, and frequent influx of leading scientists and practitioners from around the world participating in working group projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, geography, data science, statistics, fisheries, environmental science and management, or related disciplines at the time of application

Preferred:

  • Proficient in R programming
  • Some analytical and modeling background, particularly spatial analyses
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: 12 months, with the potential for extension pending funding and evaluation of performance.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Junior Specialist positions, with salary step commensurate with qualifications. 100% time appointment for 1 year from start date, with possibility for additional year(s) of employment contingent upon performance and funding. Full benefits package included.
