Jacobs has an increasing portfolio of work across the UK and Ireland’s most high-profile projects and programmes. We are currently working across a range of sectors and projects including transport, water and energy for local, regional and national clients including government agencies, local authorities, utilities and energy companies.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Ecologist to join our award-winning ecology team, which is at the forefront of solving the world’s most complex environmental challenges and opportunities.

As well as being part of one the UK’s largest most dynamic and respected ecology teams, you will work with some of the UKs most respected organisations and be contributing to some of the largest, complex projects in the UK.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with demonstrable skills and experience encompassing some or all of the following:

  • A background in terrestrial ecology with demonstratable experience as an ornithologist
  • Good bird identification skills, with an understanding of bird ecology and a range of generic and species specific bird survey techniques
  • Innovative scoping and execution of field surveys and data analysis
  • Technical reporting and impact assessment in cognisance of national legislation and guidance
  • Effective stakeholder and regulator engagement
  • Infrastructure programmes and projects

What’s more important though is your ability to think outside the box, provide constructive feedback and recognise opportunities to improve the way we do things for our clients.

Wherever you are based, we understand that pursuing a new opportunity is a big decision, so we’re not asking for a commitment right now. Instead, why not simply register to start a discussion and see where it goes?

About you:

The successful person will join a respected and ambitious company with excellent career prospects both locally and internationally.  You will work as part of a diverse and highly skilled team of over 170 ecologists in the UK (600 globally) and work with hydrologists, geomorphologists, engineers, planner and project managers to provide support and advice to our clients. You will ensure ecology input is considered by project teams, work as a first point of contact and, with the support of the wider team, provide high quality technical advice.

The role will include:

  • Working in multidisciplinary teams – quickly building rapport and trust to ensure that terrestrial ecology requirements are recognised, acknowledged and constraints acted upon.
  • Designing ecology monitoring programmes – develop survey programmes, lead and/or manage survey teams and be responsible for high quality data collection.
  • Using your experience as an ornithologist – to provide expert advice to clients (internal and external).
  • Leveraging your experience of national legislation – to support Environmental Impact Assessment and Habitats Regulation Appraisals etc.
  • Acting as a Health and Safety champion – contributing to the development and review of risk assessments and method statements.
  • A willingness to both learn from and mentor others – develop and share skills that build team and individual resilience. This will include engagement with our global communities of practice, externally facing communications (conferences, presentations, client meetings) and training events.
  • Travel across the UK and Ireland to undertake site work – you will need a willingness to work in remote locations and, at times, stay away from home during the working week.
