Summary

We are seeking a dedicated individual to fulfill the role of a Project Manager for Luengue-Luiana in Angola,

one of Panthera’s flagship projects in southern Africa. This project aims to engage communities as business

and conservation partners to restrore threatened carnivore and depleted ungulate populations in Luengue- Luiana National Park, as a significant contributor to the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA). The Project Manager will coordinate and lead field operations in the identified Important Habitat Zone (IHZ) in Luengue-Luiana. This will entail managing project staff to implement appropriate conservation management practices. The candidate with be required to liase with Angolan government officials, local communities and other key stakeholders. The Project Manager will be expected to be based in camp in Angola for the majority of the time.

Job Description

  • Manage and oversee project staff including community game scouts, ecological monitoring team, data analysts and drivers
  • Liaise with experts in various fields to obtain the best advice on conservation management practices.
  •  Liaise with key stakeholders (government, partners and NGO’s) in the region.
  •  Ecological monitoring of identified conservation areas (conducting wildlife surveys, vegetation monitoring).
  • Develop and design monitoring programs specific to identified conservation areas.
  • Work with Panthera’s KAZA Director in implementing broader conservation strategies such as community programs, large carnivore monitoring etc.
  •  Manage overall project expenditure i.e. monthly expense reporting, cashflow and procurement.
  • In collaboration with Grant Administrator and Business Development, ensure the above is aligned to grant budgets and requirements.
  •  In collaboration with Program Manager of Southern Africa, recruit and manage project staff.
  • Draft comprehensive written project reports for the respective donors in collaboration with Business Development and Grants team.
  • Review and sign off on financial project reports prepared by the Grant Administrator.
  • Follow the timeline and work plan identified for funding from donors including IUCN Save our Species (SOS), Lion Recovery Fund (LRF), World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), OAK Foundation and other funders.

Requirements

  •  5-8 years management experience in the conservation sector;
  •  B.Sc. in Conservation Biology or a related field (MSc advantageous);
  • Exceptional project planning and management skills;
  • Proven ability to effectively manage teams;
  • Experience in managing project budgets;
  • Excellent report writing skills;
  • Communication, facilitation and diplomacy skills;
  • Proven ability manage new conservation programs in remote locations;
  •  Proven ability to support major fundraising efforts
  • Experience working with high-level government staff and policy-makers;
  • Willingness to travel regularly and work outside conventional hours/environments;
  • Foreign language skills relevant to Angola advantageous;
  • Proficiency in MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as experience in using GIS software
