A Protected Sites Strategy Pilot is being tested for Cumbria Raised Mires because experience of 20+ years of trying to deliver favourable management of wetland SSSIs through agri-environment schemes (HLS, ESA, Countryside Stewardship) has shown that these schemes have had limited success in delivering improvements in condition or arresting decline on lowland raised bogs habitats. We therefore need some new tools to deliver recovering condition on sites that need non-agricultural management and costly capital works that are outside the expertise of the majority of farmers.
