The reservoir is important for its breeding cormorants, wintering and moulting waterfowl and migrating birds. It is an internationally important wetland, designated as a Ramsar site, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Protection Area. The Trust’s discovery park is an excellent location for avid bird watchers with picturesque views over the reservoir.

The site comprises extensive areas of woodland species-rich meadows, lakes and former plotland gardens covering an area of 461 acres. Over 350 species of flowering plants have been recorded, and 30 butterflies including white admirals, green hairstreaks, marbled whites and grizzled skippers. In the summer there is the opportunity to enjoy Turtl
