Overview

An opportunity has risen to work at Britain’s biggest and most naturally functioning floodplain wetland. Insh Marshes is part of Cairngorms Connect, a 600 square kilometre landscape scale ecological restoration project set within the stunning Cairngorms National Park.

We are looking for an energetic and highly motivated Assistant Warden to be part of our small but dedicated team. Duties will include management of our small herd of Konik ponies, ongoing survey, monitoring and management of the wetland and wet grassland habitats along with upkeep of the reserve infrastructure. Experience of working with livestock and a tractor certificate are desirable. As Strathspey holds one of the largest inland populations of breeding waders in the UK, a significant proportion of which breed on the reserve, surveying these waders and other key wetland species will be a key part of the role and as such previous experience will be necessary.

The post holder will be jointly responsible for the day to day supervision of the residential and day volunteers, therefore experience of managing a wide range of volunteers is essential.

You will be an excellent communicator as your role will involve working with a wide range of audiences including graziers, neighbours, land owners, local communities and reserve visitors.

Your own personal development will be an important part of your objectives in this role and the diversity and size of the estate and work programme provides plenty of opportunity. This opportunity offers the successful applicant the chance to work and develop their ecological knowledge of upland wet grassland, wetlands and woodland habitats.

The RSPB is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to the appropriate safeguarding checks upon appointment.
