The east coast of Northern Ireland is one of the most important areas for breeding and staging terns in the UK. Main sites include Larne Lough (Blue Circle and Swan Islands), Belfast Lough, Copeland Islands, Strangford Lough and Carlingford Lough (Green Island). Currently, there are several common, Arctic and Sandwich tern colonies along the east coast of Northern Ireland, managed mainly by the RSPB and the National Trust, which require deployment of a coordinated conservation strategy through partnership working, sharing knowledge, expertise and resources.
