We are looking for two Assistant Wardens to join our nature reserves team based on the Exe Estuary in Devon.

Salary: £23,939 – £26,558 Per Annum
Hours: Full Time for 37.5 hours per week
Duration: Fixed Term for 12 months
Benefits: Pension, Life Assurance, 26 days Annual Leave (pro-rata)

In your role as Assistant Warden, you will assist in coordinating and leading the delivery of a busy work programme across multiple sites. Your role will be varied – in any given week you could be supervising and developing volunteers, delivering hands-on habitat management, surveying wildlife and habitats, supervising contractors, working with visitors or carrying out estate maintenance.

As the Assistant Warden for the Exe Estuary, you will be working across a diverse range of sites in Devon, including vibrant wetlands such as Exminster Marshes and Bowling Green Marsh, and cirl bunting reserves such as Labrador Bay. You will regularly lead and supervise a team of weekly and residential volunteers, so we are looking for someone who enjoys being a team player and is happy working with various volunteer groups in all weathers!

Essential skills include:

  • You will have knowledge and experience of practical habitat and estate management.
  • You will have a proven track record of working of completing work alone and working within a varied team.
  • Comfortable managing volunteers from a range of backgrounds
  • Reasonable bird ID and knowledge of natural history
  • Be willing to assist with predator control to benefit ground nesting birds
  • Full, manual driving licence that is valid in the UK.

Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Lantra or equivalent qualification in using equipment such as brushcutter and ATV, PA1/6 pesticides.
  • Knowledge of servicing and maintaining vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to agreed standards.
  • Experience of staff or volunteer recruitment and line management.
  • Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments.
  • Experience of biological surveys

Additional information:

  • This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations.
  • This role will require occasional weekend, early morning and evening working so will need someone who is able to be flexible.

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
