RSPB Forsinard Flows reserve is working to restore damaged peatland habitats across 21,000ha of the Flow Country. A variety of restoration methods and funding sources are combined to restore peatland habitats to favourable condition. This role will work to deliver the necessary criteria required to set up IUCN Peatland Code projects on the reserve on a six-month contract.

This role will be responsible for identifying and preparing degraded peatland sites for restoration. This will involve preparing sites to meet the validation criteria of the IUCN Peatland Code.

This role will help to successfully raise income from the carbon market to restore peatland and help address climate change. In short, translating innovative green finance mechanisms into reality – and ‘to learn by doing’.

There is considerable preparatory work to be completed before a site can be validated and entered on the IUCN register for investment – no funding can be generated until this process has been completed.

This Peatland Restoration Project Officer post will be based at RSPB Forsinard Flows in the Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland.

There is the possibility of renting accommodation on the Reserve.

Key tasks:

  • Working with the Site Manager and Warden team to identify suitable sites for Peatland Restoration through the IUCN Peatland Code Criteria.
  • Preparing sites for Peatland Code validation. This will involve.
  • Site baseline condition field surveys.
  • Collation of peat depth data and mapping.
  • Creating site-based restoration plan.
  • Project design (inc GIS and drone work).
  • Emissions and additionality calculators.
  • Risk Assessment Matrix.
  • Stakeholder analysis.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Some knowledge of the theory and practice of project management
  • Competent IT user (e.g. MS packages, Outlook etc).
  • Competent GIS software user (e.g Arc platforms such as ArcGIS Pro).
  • Skills relevant to the specific aims and objectives of the project.
  • The ability to communicate about the project in a passionate and credible manner.
  • An ability to produce clear written communications.
  • An ability to persuade and influence a wide range of people, both internally and externally.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to find creative solutions.
  • Able to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Proven time management and organisational skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • At least 5 GCSE’s, or equivalent, including Maths and English
  • Report writing.
  • Working with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Proven experience delivering actions relevant to the specific project.
  • Ability to work well as part of a cross-functional project team.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Drone piloting experience.
  • Organising training events, workshops or facilitated discussions and meetings.
  • Experience of working with contractors.
  • Experience of producing written materials, newsletters and similar project related communications.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and working in partnerships to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Experience of managing volunteers.
