Are you passionate about coastal nature and love sharing your enthusiasm? Would you like a weekend job where you get to spend time on the shore, watching and protecting wildlife? We’re looking for a dedicated person to join our team at the Pagham Harbour and Medmerry nature reserves as an assistant conservation ranger to help us protect the amazing birdlife here.

What’s the role about?

We are looking for someone to undertake regular weekend patrols to help reduce disturbance to the designated breeding and over-wintering birds living here. During the summer months, you’ll be a key part of our beach nesting bird team whilst in the winter you’ll help secure the wider habitat for feeding and roosting waders, ducks and geese.

The Key duties of the post are:

  • Carry out regular patrols across both reserves, talking to visitors and carrying surveys.
  • Monitor and maintain records relating to the designated SPA species and disturbance events.
  • Work with our team of volunteer rangers to further minimise recreational disturbance.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Good communications skills
  • An ability to engage members of the public about our wildlife
  • A team player who can work well with our team of staff and volunteers
  • A passion for wildlife and nature
  • Basic computer literacy (Outlook, word etc)

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge of shore-bird species and their conservation requirements (on job training can be provided).

Additional Information:

  • This is a Part-Time, Fixed-Term role for 18.75 hours per week until October 2023. The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
  • The role is primarily focused on weekends and there is flexibility in the timing of non-weekend hours, as well as job share considerations.

This post is jointly funded by Arun District Council and Chichester District Council as part of The Pagham Harbour SPA Recreation Mitigation Strategy. The strategy aims to mitigate the impact of housing development on the Pagham Harbour SPA and Medmerry proposed SPA through a combination of actions and activities.

The successful candidate will be expected to forge close links with Arun and Chichester District Council Foreshore Officers, the staff employed by the Solent Bird Aware scheme (a wider scheme covering the Solent from West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight), and staff employed by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
