The SCZ Bird Department cares for 1000+ individual birds from around the globe. Their focus is providing dynamic, free-flight mixed species experiences for the zoo guest that highlights the diversity of birds. The team focuses on species specific care, while supporting sustainability thru participation in AZA SSP programs. Divided into five major areas, the team oversees a large indoor tropical aviary, a seasonal outdoor aviary that presents Australian and South American birds, a colony of Humboldt penguins, multiple outdoor exhibits displaying birds from flamingos to eagles, and finally a dedicated Avian Propagation Facility that is maintained off exhibit.
