About the role

The Senior Freshwater Consultant Ecologist will join the APEM Ireland team, ideally in either Cork or Sligo but with flexible, homeworking arrangements also available, and help to deliver projects, with support from your fellow Senior Consultants, Associates and Directors already in place.

With numerous projects already won, a myriad of connections with clients and potential clients secured, and a number of major tenders already submitted, in addition to a place on four consultancy frameworks, APEM Ireland is well set for the rest of 2021, into 2022 and beyond! We are now looking to add a capable and motivated Senior Freshwater Ecologist to our team as part of a growing business

You will provide additional capability to the APEM Ireland office allowing us to respond to more Requests for Proposals, as well as providing additional capacity to deliver won work. You will spend some of your time in the field, undertaking a wide range of ecological and environmental survey and sampling work, as well as time in the office, writing tenders and constructing well costed and focussed proposals for clients, interpreting data, undertaking assessments and writing reports.

Your main area of technical focus will be the freshwater environment and associated ecology. Good knowledge and experience of work with one or more of the following will be essential:

  • Appropriate Assessment related to the freshwater environment
  • Hydromorphology;
  • Hydro-ecology;
  • Fisheries;
  • Macroinvertebrates (White-clawed crayfish; Freshwater Pearl Mussel, Q scores and general macroinvertebrate communities etc);
  • Aquatic and semi-aquatic FW invasive species
  • Water quality assessment and monitoring;
  • Natural flood management and/or catchment management;
  • Wetland assessment and management
  • Peatland restoration and management
  • Water Framework Directive – requirements, provisions, assessments etc
  • Habitats Directive and the freshwater environment, habitats and species
  • Ecological assessment and walkover surveys

About you

You are a graduate with at least 5 years’ post-graduate work preferably with experience in Environmental / Ecological Consultancy. You might already be a member of a body, such as CIEEM, CIWEM etc and/or considering achieving Chartered status. You are energetic and enthusiastic, and as happy to spend time on the road and in the field as at the desk in the office or working from home on proposals, costing spreadsheets and reports.

Required skills:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant environmental or ecological subject
  • Full, clean driving licence
  • Right to live and work in Ireland
  • Willing and able to spend time away from home and when needed to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Tender and proposal writing skills and experience
  • Ability to cost work requested
  • Ability to manage won projects
  • Field survey and sampling skills
  • Field identification skills for at least one of freshwater fish or macroinvertebrates
  • Flexible, adaptable and punctual
  • Member, or considering membership, of a chartered institution and willing and able to work towards achieving chartered status
