Wardell Armstrong LLP is a successful multi-disciplinary consultancy with 13 offices across the UK, employing approximately 500 staff. We currently have circa 50 permanent ecologists across 8 offices and working together with our clients, the ecology team deliver solutions to challenging problems in a wide range of projects of varying sizes including residential, large scale mixed use developments, utilities & infrastructure, green energy (wind turbines, solar) and quarries plus a range of other bespoke projects and clients.

The Roles

We have opportunities in the following locations Cardiff, Birmingham, Bolton, London, Stoke, Leeds, Glasgow and Edinburgh for permanent full time or part timeSenior/Principal Ecologists, and Ecologists. Along with casual (0 Hour contracts)/seasonal (temporary 6 month contracts) for Ecologists.

The Ecology Team works alongside a variety of other environmental disciplines within the Firm, including environmental planning, archaeology, arboriculture, landscape architecture and engineering and responsibilities include:

  • Undertake ecological desk studies
  • Assist with protected species surveys
  • Compile, analyse, evaluate and interpret survey data
  • Be exposed to the full breadth of ecology works in a short space of time
  • Produce and contribute to technical reports including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments and others
  • Map Habitats in a GIS system and contribute towards Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • Gain insights into the planning system
  • Learn project management skills
  • Be taught the necessary skills for you to advance your career in ecology

You: 

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Preferably have a minimum of 6 months experience of ecological work;
  • Hold a degree or equivalent in ecology or a related discipline.
  • Hold, or be working towards, ‘qualifying member’ status, or higher, of CIEEM
  • Have a basic to good understanding of relevant UK Nature conservation legislation and planning process;
  • Have an adaptable and flexible approach to work to meet demands at peak times.  As the role is likely to involve occasional longer and / or unsociable hours, a willingness to undertake moderate (significant at times) travel to sites within the UK, sometimes staying locally for several days is essential. ;
  • Holder of at least one protected species licence is preferable but not essential.
  • Be able to work effectively alone and as part of a team, learning and sharing expertise.
  • A full UK driving licence and own vehicle
  • Holder of a valid CSCS card is preferable but not essential.
  • Have experience of preparing digital maps via GIS
