Our VISTA project seeks to build a place-based experiential science and social studies education program for local elementary school students. This program hopes to build student proficiency, confidence, and curiosity in science and social studies leading to improved school performance and high school completion. Building and expanding student knowledge and understanding of natural resources will provide greater opportunities for higher education and post-school careers over time moving students and their families towards greater economic possibilities. In the short term, this project will provide economic opportunities for community members through participating as instructors, guides, and presenters. Curriculum development will be designed for both classroom presentation and field trips.
