The 2020 Valles Caldera’s SCA entomology program is a field study on the populations and communities of pest and beneficial arthropods in the forests of the Preserve (see https://www.nps.gov/vall/index.htm).  The study includes 2 main components:  (1) arthropod responses to forest thinning and prescribed fire in a montane forested ecosystem, and (2) controlling Douglas fir bark beetle outbreaks in an old-growth forest on the Preserve. SCA interns will conduct field sampling using several types of insect traps, and then process the samples in the laboratory; this involves sorting the specimens and preparing them for identification and eventual museum archival, along with data recording and computer data entry.  Primary taxa include beetles, grasshoppers and crickets, ants, spiders,
