The main projects for the Valles Caldera’s SCA wildlife/fisheries program in 2020 are (1) monitoring fisheries in Preserve streams during spring and fall, (2) a field study on the behavior, abundance and distributions of the federally-endangered Jemez Mountains Salamander, (3) surveys for the endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, (4) monitoring mountain lion “kill sites” (where lions have predated elk and deer), and (5) conducting surveys for the reintroduced northern leopard frog.  SCA interns will be working with NPS wildlife biologists and a university professor to conduct the salamander study.  In addition, SCA interns will work (as time permits) with the entomology group to sample ground-dwelling arthropods (salamander food resources) as part of a salamander diet study.
