The Department of Conservation (DOC) is in the process of designing and implementing an integrated freshwater monitoring programme. This programme is undergoing staged development and implementation at national, catchment and local scales, collecting data on plant and animal communities, water quality and habitat characteristics at a range of locations throughout the country. The objective of this programme is to provide data at a range of scales to enable robust status and trend assessment of the ecological integrity of freshwater streams and rivers.
