Overview

North Carolina State University is seeking experienced avian field technicians to assist with research on Henslow’s Sparrows near Greenville, NC from April 1st through July 31st, 2022. Fieldwork includes mist netting and banding birds, tracking birds with radio telemetry, distance sampling surveys, nest searching, and vegetation sampling. Top candidates will work well in a team and be comfortable working long hours outdoors. Housing at field site, a field vehicle, and a wage of $12–14/hr (up to 40 hours/week) is provided.

Field work includes:

  • Conducting distance and spot mapping surveys for Henslow’s Sparrows
  • Mist netting, banding, and radio tagging Henslow’s Sparrows
  • Resighting color banded Henslow’s Sparrows and nest searching
  • Erecting and maintaining radio telemetry grids
  • Surveying vegetation cover and composition

Required qualifications:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, or similar discipline
  • Have a solid work ethic, positive attitude, and strong observational skills
  • Have experience conducting avian surveys, setting up mist nets, and handling birds
  • Can conduct field work beginning at sunrise in hot, buggy conditions and in uneven terrain
  • Are able to follow directions and work well both independently and in a team
  • Hold a valid US driver’s license

Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience with radio telemetry, nest searching, vegetation surveying, operating handheld GPS units, or working in grassland habitats.
