Overview

Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is looking for a “Terrestrial Team Supervisor” and “Terrestrial Team Assistant” to join us as soon as possible (February) at our research bases, located in the NE Aegean islands. The terrestrial team carries out surveys throughout the year with a focus on Samos island, but also extending to Ikaria and the small islands of the northern Dodecanese. Current research is on the subpopulation of golden jackals of Samos, Chameleon population size and distribution, and observational surveys of various lizard, snake, tortoise, amphibian, and bird species.

The primary role of the Supervisor will be leading these surveys, training and guiding interns, and general base management. The primary role of the assistant will be supporting the supervisor in data collection and data management. The position will be open until filled.

Essential required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • For Supervisor: A Master’s degree in wildlife biology, or similar, OR a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology and 2 or more years of wildlife biology experience. For Assistant: a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology.
  • Managing and training students and volunteers and demonstrated leadership, supervision, and team building skills.
  • Knowledge of methods of data collection and principles and techniques of research and analysis, in particular: terrestrial biodiversity, species identification, habitat mapping
  • Ability to work on weekends and/or holidays.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative, supervisory team.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and good computer skills.
  • Ability to write scientific reports and papers.

Preferred experience:

Experience working with ArcGIS for field planning and spatial analysis.

Lipsi and Samos Islands, Greece.

We offer:

Supervisor: salary according to the experience, accommodation and full board.

Assistant: initially we offer accommodation and full board, and this can be later extended to also include financial compensation.
