In honour of Professor William Russell, the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) has established a special Fund to support a Research Fellowship that will advance the international development and application of the Three Rs – Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. These concepts were established by William Russell and his research assistant Mr Rex Burch through their work with UFAW which resulted in the publication of ‘The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique’ in 1959.
