Overview

Travel to the United States and become involved as a volunteer in this exciting 8- to 12-week conservation project in the Golden State! You will play an active role in different nature conservation projects on the US West Coast, living amidst California’s breathtaking wilderness. Your work on the project will take you to beautiful regions of the US state, well away from the beaten path, giving you an incomparable insight into California’s wild nature.

Details

California has plenty to offer for nature lovers. The state has nine national parks, including the towering trees of Redwood National Park, the desert landscape of Death Valley National Park and, of course, Yosemite. Your base station near Boulder Creek and/or Lake Tahoe – depending on the length of your stay – is where you will start your time in several of the most beautiful parts of California. In between project time you will have the chance to go on road trips to visit the highlights of the West Coast along with your fellow team members.

Your stay will begin with a comprehensive safety and security training which will show you how to use your tools properly. You will then spend five to eight days on the project with three to six days off in between two project units. Each international team of about 10 members will work on different tasks, focusing on trail building and maintenance, erosion control and vegetation work. You will work no longer than 10 hours per day. However, please be aware that physical work can be extremely challenging and may take place under various weather conditions.

Accommodation

You will stay in tents, either in the wilderness or on camping sites with washing facilities. Meals during projects are included in the price and are prepared by the team. On off days you need to take care of your daily meals yourself. You will return to your base station near Boulder Creek, located in a Redwood forest, after every project and will have three to six days off for free time activities. If you join the project for 12 weeks, you will additionally get involved in conservation work at breathtaking Lake Tahoe (6 weeks Boulder Creek + 6 weeks Lake Tahoe). Here, you will be accommodated in a similar volunteer accommodation including shared dormitories, shared bathrooms, a kitchen, a common area and an office.
