Natural England as the Government’s adviser for the natural environment in England has a duty to further the conservation and enhancement of SSSIs. This includes assessing proposed activities by landowners/occupiers which may damage the special interest of SSSIs to ensure they are undertaken in a suitable manner that does not damage the special interests for which sites are protected. Wildfowling clubs, where they are landowners/occupiers of SSSIs, need to apply to Natural England for consent to undertake such activities.
