WWF-New Zealand, Kaihautū Taiao/Environmental Science Director role

Kia noho ngātahi te tangata ki ngā kura taiao. Help build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

Aotearoa’s unique species and ecosystems need a creative, innovative leader who recognizes the connection Māori have to this environment. Is it you?

WWF-New Zealand is looking for a Kaihautū Taiao/Environmental Science Director. This new role won’t be given to just anyone. We need a true innovator with mana and senior-level experience to lead a passionate team working to gift New Zealand with global leadership in environmental innovation. Someone with a particular knack at seeing the long view, based on a deep understanding of science, mātauranga Māori and politics, while building with their team and stakeholders’ pathways to desired goals.

We need a senior leader who knows how to team up Knowledge and Science with Marketing and Finance to build a system that creates knowledge/science-based products that people want to be part of, in order to build a funding stream that will support greater investment in knowledge/science-based innovation.

WWF-New Zealand has embarked on a five-year strategy that calls for fundamental change to how we engage, work and fund our activities. The ability to create fundable knowledge/science-based programmes and the pitch documentation to achieve key partnerships is crucial. You’ll need to be knowledge/science-smart as well as people-smart, and able to build trusted relationships that give innovation the space and capital needed to thrive.

You’ll need to be able to think on your feet, providing authoritative comment to the media when required, in language that ordinary New Zealanders can connect with. You’ll have the knowledge to build capability and capacity in evidence-based decision making and robust impact reporting.

Your technical experience and capability in environmental knowledge/science is essential. Your expertise in marine protection, fisheries, climate change, biodiversity conservation principles and practices, and environmental innovation will be well regarded and appreciated by a team of technical experts who are looking for direction and inspiration.

The position is a full-time, permanent role and is based in WWF’s office in central Wellington.
